Two years ago former Delta CEO Richard Anderson took over running Amtrak. His mission was to make the business profitable and to expand service where it is most needed. People are agitated that he is doing that. Link below because Kinja

They give you a certain number of free views a month. I don’t know if this link would be better.

I hit the paywall right away. In any event, “ profitable” even if it is obtainable, is obviously going to conflict with the desires of senators in flyover states not to lose those money losing cross country trains that provide subsidized travel to their constituents who might otherwise be lacking options (but would probably be better served by buses.) Trains are going to be best for short to medium length trips in high-density areas.

I can’t read the article either, but would like to.
We have had excellent experiences with AMTRAK in the Northeast Corridor. From Boston to Albany, Boston to NYC (it drops you off right downtown), and Albany to DC (it drops you off right by Metro) the service is great. The train often hits 110 mph or more, and Acela is even faster. We have even had some good trips down to Florida.
This is not the case, however, for most M idwest runs. In the Midwest, AMTRAK is slow and always behind schedule. Now, that is not necessarily bad if you use the train trip as part of your va cation. The Southwest Chief and California Zephyr cross the Rocky Mountains in place s where cars do not travel. If you just sit back, enjoy the ride, watch the scenery, and not worry about the time, it is fine.
